Flyer for Family Art Night 2017: Harriet’s Spirit with Marcus Shelby. An evening of artistic call and response with composer Marcus Shelby and teaching artist Andi Wong was held on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Rooftop School.
Marcus introduced families to the story and musical themes from his children’s opera written for Rooftop School. Opera Parallèle’s Harriet’s Spirit tells the story of a middle school girl who triumphs over the challenges of adolescence with Civil War-era legend Harriet Tubman as her role model and spirit guide. Families worked together create their own family story quilt artwork, art which was then incorporated into the opera’s production design.
