RECIPES FOR ART PROJECTS (DOUGHS)


BAKED DOUGH

Combine 2 cups salt, 1 cup flour, and 1-2/3 cups water. Cook mixture until thick Pat dough around juice, tuna fish cans, or other forms. Beads, rocks, peas, macaroni, buttons, and scraps of materials may be pressed into the dough. Bake 1 hour at 200 degrees.UNCOOKED PLAYDOUGH

Mix 3 cups flour, 1 cup salt, 1 cup water, food coloring, and 1 teaspoon oil. Add 1 teaspoon alum.


CRAFT CLAY

Combine 1 cup cornstarch, 1-1/4 cups water, 2 cups baking soda in a pot. Cook until thickened to doughlike consistency. Turn out on pastry board and knead. Keep in plastic bag. Good for plaques and other modeling and can be painted when dry.


COOKED SALT DOUGH

Mix 4 cups salt, 1 cup cornstarch with sufficient water to form a paste. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Dough is not sticky and will not get moldy because of high salt content. Note: Coffee grounds, sand, cornmeal, etc. can be added to the above recipes to provide texture and variety when dried. Hardened mixture can be painted.


GAK (STRETCH DOUGH or PLAY PUTTY)

Mix and set aside in a large bowl: 2 cups white glue and 1-1/2 cups water. Fill three containers with 1/3 cups warm water and 1 teaspoon of borax each. Slowly pour one container of the borax mixture into the glue mixture and stir. Remove glob. Pour a second batch of the warm water and borax, mix and remove glob. Again, add the third borax mixture, mix and remove the last of the dough glob. Store in airtight container (ziplock bag). Play with dough with clean hands on a clean surface, as dough gets dirty when dropped on the floor.


KOOL-AID PLAY DOUGH

Select Kool Aid for color and fragrance. Mix 2 packages (same variety) of unsweetened Kool Aid, 2-1/2 cups of white flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1 teaspoon alum in a large bowl. Add 3 tbsps. cooking oil, and 2 cups boiling water to dry ingredients and mix thoroughly. Cool and store in an airtight container. Will stay pliable for weeks.


MODELING CLAY

Put 2 cups salt and 2/3 of a cup water in a pot. Stir over heat for 4-5 minutes. Add 1 cup cornstarch and and 1/2 cup cold water. Stir until smooth. Cook until thick. Store in a plastic bag. This clay will not crumble.


PAPER DOUGH

Mix 2 cups salt, 2 cups flour, 2 cups absorbent, shredded paper (paper tissue or towel). Add water to dough consistency, Add 1 teaspoon oil of cloves as a preservative. Use for making small jewelry type objects.


SAND SCULPTURE CLAY

Mix 2 cups fine sand, 1 cup cornstarch, 1 cup water in a pan. Heat on stove and stir until mixture thickens. Cool with a wet paper towel covering clay. Use for sculpture.


SAWDUST DOUGH

Mix 1 cup white school paste and 2 cups sawdust until it makes a ball. Model as desired. This dough will harden and can be painted.
