About Rooftop School
Rooftop is a K-8 public alternative elementary school. Our student population reflects San Francisco's diverse ethnic background. Rooftop's academic program, which emphasizes student self-worth and self-learning, is well-defined and innovatively presented by dedicated teachers. Programs in art, music, and drama are considered an integral part of the Rooftop experience.
Visual Arts Program
Art Coordinators: Sandra Proctor-Dabis, Jill Stern & Andi Wong
The goal of the art program at Rooftop is to bring art to each classroom on a regular basis. The program has over 100 "Art Parent" volunteers each year. For most classes in grades K-5, art parent volunteers teach art lessons on a weekly basis in coordination with the classroom teacher. Grade 6-8 have daily art instruction with instructor Cyndy Sugawara. Through the art program, the students become familiar with the elements of art and expand their experiences with art media as they progress through the grades. They develop artistic skills as they learn about the art process and more importantly, they develop positive feelings of self-esteem. The art program enhances and reinforces the curriculum at Rooftop and is used as an integral part of learning in other subject areas.
Workshops are offered for volunteers to learn new art techniques, and the art coordinators are available to help with any question about supplies or ideas for projects. All parents are welcome to lead or assist in classroom art projects. Parents can help on a rotating basis with other art parents in your child's class. It's a fun way to meet other parents and your child's classmates as well.
