Vaughn - 1st  “Jazz Color Cutouts”

Vaughn's 1st Grade class studied Matisse cutouts.  We talked about shape and line, jagged and curved, thin and thick and the different feelings achieved.  We talked about the colors Matisse used and what feelings they inspired in the children:  calm, joyful, angry, excited etc. We talked about color relationships and how colors change next to each other. Finally we talked about space, how to place the individual paper and how placement changed the impression of the whole piece. The children spent time cutting and moving pieces around, choosing colors, changing colors.  The final pieces are cut outs from painted paper, glued onto backgrounds, inspired by the Jazz music they listened to as they worked.  The size of the pieces is approximately  20"x42" and 22"x30"  framed with white matting and black wood frame.

8-2 – 8th  “Hear Them Play!”

In keeping with the celebration of Jazz and Blues music at Rooftop this year our groovin’ 8th graders pieced together a room of sound for this year’s auction. Bouncing with color, rhythm throughout, action happening in every corner! What a vibrant addition to any room – public or private! After studying the art of Romare Bearden, Henri Matisse and Miriam Shapiro the students were given wonderful photographic images of musicians and singers making their music. From there, they each created a figure of their choice inspired by music – musicians playing their instruments, singings belting it out, dancers moving to the sounds. The figures were brought to life with scraps of fabric, wall paper and magazine clippings. The figures were then put together in one room, each representing one of our Rooftop 8th graders and mounted for display. You can here them all play on forever if you have the winning bid!!! Don’t miss it!  Size: 2x5 feet
