2004 Trim A Tree

Supporting our school study of Moliere’s “The Miser,” the 2004 tree is a tribute to the holiday’s most Miser-ly character, the Grinch. The 2004 ornaments depicted the Who’s from Who-ville and heart-filled presents made out of tin and wire.

Lunatique Fantastique’s “Reframing the Hourglass,” a puppetry performance chronicling the relationship of two friends, was the inspiration for the 2004 tree.  The ornaments were made of foil, wire and decoupaged tissue.

Keith Terry & Crosspulse’s use of found sound and music making from ordinary objects inspired these holiday bells, created from clay pots.  Students were asked to complete the sentence, “If I were a bell, I’d ring for...,“ by naming three three things.

Students created their own version of their imaginary selves by making their heads from Sculpey clay and painting soda can bodies that used rebar ties for arms and legs.  These ornaments were inspired by our study of Sandra Cisneros’ House on Mango Street, whose heroine often imagined that she was somebody very different than her ordinary self.

The beautiful looped wire sculpture of Ruth Asawa, seen in the deYoung retrospective, provided the inspiration for this year’s tree.  The transparent forms of the ornaments were shaped by wrapping balls of ice, which was then melted away after the forms were woven in wire.
