ART IS... is a Rooftop

art education program that uses works of art to provide an inexhaustible resource for exploration, reflection and understanding.  The program actively engages students, supports learning across the curriculum, and builds critical thinking skills through “hands-on” art making, reflection and research.

ART IS... will bring works of art (music, dance, theater and visual art, with a focus on multicultural work) to all Rooftop students and develop partnerships between teachers, teaching artists, arts organizations and art parents to develop integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum that will support learning for all students.

This website was created to assist teachers, parents and students in their classroom study.

Rooftop Alternative School ART IS... JAZZ
Rooftop’s 2007-2008
ART IS... JAZZ
will feature accomplished
composer/bassist/bandleader Marcus Shelby and a performance by the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra (MSJO). Rooftop students will engage in a multi-disciplined study of jazz, a true American art form.

Featuring MUSIC Selections from:

Shelby’s “epic oratorio” (SF Chronicle), “Harriet Tubman: Bound for the Promised Land,” tells the compelling story of the great American hero, Harriet Tubman.  “Port Chicago” pays tribute to the hundreds of African American sailors who lost their lives in a terrible munitions explosion in the Alameda shipyard, the single worst disaster on US soil during WWII. “Midtown Sunset,” a tone poem for jazz orchestra, is based on the artwork of Harlem renaissance painter Romare Bearden and the poetry of Langston Hughes.
